Bunbury Port Optimisation Plan
The South West region – and the Port of Bunbury – are the front line of WA’s next major economic shift in manufacturing and energy transition.
The State Government has invested $4.8m in the Bunbury Port Optimisation Plan (BPOP), Southern Ports’ long-term strategic framework for the future development of the Port of Bunbury.
BPOP is an essential part of planning the economic development of the South West region by ensuring the Port of Bunbury can continue to enable trade, attract industry and support jobs over the coming decades. It’s essentially the ‘blueprint’ for Port of Bunbury development, so it can:
- continue to support existing bulk and breakbulk trade
- adapt to future industries – including energy transition and advanced manufacturing
- make efficient use of harbour and land assets, and
- support regional economic growth across the South West.
It considers future requirements across berths, channels, port land and precincts, helping to guide how the port may need to evolve over time, and also plays an important role in informing investment decisions. By providing a clear line of sight between current operations and future needs, BPOP ensures development is planned in a staged and coordinated way.
As one of WA’s Seven Cities, Bunbury’s future will be built on its existing strengths and a new wave of emerging opportunities, including renewable energy, value-adding in mining and agriculture, and expanded local manufacturing.
The Port of Bunbury is central to enabling this growth, providing the critical infrastructure and connectivity required to support the region’s economic future.
