Outer harbour sand trap access restrictions

From September the Fairy Terns could start nesting at the Outer Harbour sand trap 1 and possibly sand trap 2 – see map below.

The Australian Fairy Tern is listed as threatened (Vulnerable) under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and state legislation across its range. The nesting season runs from September to February. During this time, we need to provide safe space for this species to nest and raise the next generation, which is critical to their overall survival.

How you can help:

• Be aware: Stay informed about nesting seasons and report sightings of predator or public watercraft landing on the beach to Southern Ports.
• Keep away from the nesting area: Walking in or near the nesting site is not permitted without authorisation from Southern Ports.
• Maintain a safe environment: Driving near the nesting site and any sand removal activity is prohibited during this period.
• Follow signage: Heed any signs or temporary fencing that cordon off areas to protect nesting sites.
• Spread the word: if you're unsure about what to do, contact Southern Ports.
