Wind and wave forecasts are averages. Wind gusts can be 40 per cent stronger than the forecast, and stronger still in squalls, passage of fronts and thunderstorms. Maximum waves can be twice the forecast height.
During the forecast period of severe weather, it may be advisable for vessels to heave up their anchors and hove to in deeper water, prior to weather deteriorating.
There is no requirement by the Port of Bunbury for any vessel to remain in the anchorage during any severe weather conditions.
All vessels in Port are required to tighten their mooring lines and to run out extra storm lines as appropriate.
Ship Masters must take all necessary precautions to ensure their ships remain safely alongside at all times, which may require ceasing cargo operations.
Extra care should be taken by ships on Berth 3 and Berth 5 including lowering down the offshore anchor and repositioning their ship to balance their mooring lines.
This message does not override the Master’s responsibility to ensure the safety of their vessels at all times.
