Regional scholarship launched in recognition of ports leader

A major regional education and training scholarship has been announced by Southern Ports to mark the retirement of Steve Lewis, one of the country’s most impactful port leaders.

The annual Steve Lewis Regional Scholarship will provide an individual in the Great Southern, South West or Kalgoorlie-Esperance regions with full tuition for an undergraduate degree or accredited VET program in a STEM, management/leadership, maritime or related field.

The scholarship is an apt farewell for Mr Lewis who, as one of Australia’s most experienced port chief executives, has made an indelible mark on the Australian ports sector over two decades at the helm of (the then) Dampier Port, North Queensland Bulk Ports, Midwest Ports and, most recently, Southern Ports.

Incoming Southern Ports CEO Keith Wilks acknowledged the commitment Steve has had to the ports industry and the notable connection between his leadership and the establishment of the scholarship.

“One of Steve’s key drivers has always been the desire to build strong, sustainable foundations for future generations, particularly in regional communities,” said Mr Wilks.

“The Steve Lewis Regional Scholarship will offer an outstanding opportunity for Southern Ports to continue Steve’s legacy and foster the next generation of leaders,” he added.

Steve Lewis reflected on his lasting legacy as part of his career journey and highlights.

“It’s an honour to wrap up my time as a CEO in the ports industry with a scholarship of this significance,” said Mr Lewis.

“I’m a strong believer in intergenerational assets. Every day we look at how we can make sure we’re leaving something better for the next generation and I’m pleased that this scholarship will do exactly that.”

Steve Lewis retires from Southern Ports on Friday 28 April, with Keith Wilks stepping into the CEO role.
