Southern Ports program backs community fight against cancer

For the sixth-straight year Southern Ports has thrown its support behind Bunbury Relay for Life through its Community Investment Program.

The popular community fundraiser has been held annually in Bunbury since 2002 and has raised more than $5 million for Cancer Council WA in that time.

Southern Ports Interim General Manager - South West Marty Stafford said events such as Relay for Life had a lasting positive impact on regional communities.

“We’re thrilled to support Relay for Life in Bunbury because it’s an event which unites the South West behind a truly great cause,” he said.

“The devastating impact of cancer touches everyone at some point in their lives and events like these foster a great sense of community by showing we are all in this together.

“By building lasting partnerships within our communities we make our regions better places to live and work, which is why we’re so proud of our Community Investment Program.”

More than 40 teams comprising more than 230 participants have already signed up for the 24-hour relay with under 100 days to go before the starters gun.

Relay For Life Bunbury Chair Russell Donovan said ongoing community and businesses support was the secret to the event’s longevity.

“Money raised in Bunbury stays in WA to either to support regional families facing cancer’s challenges or to help researchers make significant breakthrough in the fight against this devastating disease,” Mr Donovan said.

“The support from sponsors and participants blows me away each year, not to mention our amazing team of volunteers - some of whom have been a part of the event every year since the start.

“The event’s success is a testament to our communities but also a reflection of how much of an impact cancer has, we’re truly thankful for the support Southern Ports has been able to provide through its Community Investment Program.”

Southern Ports received a record level of applications to its Community Investment Program over the past year and the program is expected to surpass $400,000 of funding for the first time over the coming 12 months.

The program is open to applicants from the South West, Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance region until Friday 14 August.
