DREDGING WORKS IN BUNBURY

Dredging works are due to commence at the Port of Bunbury Outer Harbour on Wednesday 26 October 2022, and are expected to take two weeks.

The purpose of the maintenance programme is to maximise the depth, safety and efficiency of the channels and berths within the Port of Bunbury.

Dredging works are usually undertaken twice a year at the Port of Bunbury. A trailer suction dredge removes naturally accumulated sand and silt from the shipping channel and outer harbour berths, and deposits the material at the ocean spoil ground.

The dredge is a slow moving vessel, and the usual protocols with regard to interactions with recreational craft still applies. Turbidity resulting from the dredging is usually short lived and localised. Some odour may be noticeable at times due the decaying sea grass disturbed during dredging.

Southern Ports holds a Sea Dumping Permit No. SD2021/4012, issued by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment under the Environmental Protection (Sea Dumping) Act 1981, to load for the purposes of dumping and to dump, subject to conditions specified within the Permit.
