Southern Ports has expanded its marine operations team, with a Trainee Marine Pilot joining the Esperance Port.

Esperance Regional Manager Scott Bates said he was pleased to welcome Matt Even into the role.

“Marine pilots have a very specialised skill set,” Mr Bates said.

“While the position might be called ‘Trainee Marine Pilot’, the job requires someone who already has a wealth of experience within the marine industry.

“Matt has been working in the marine industry for the last 18 years, and our Esperance marine pilots already have over 100 years of seafaring experience between them, so Matt will be learning from some of the best.

“Matt will be a great addition to the team, and we look forward to working with him.”

Prior to joining Southern Ports Mr Even worked with offshore vessels, tankers, general cargo ships and ferries.

Mr Even said he was thrilled to take on the role with Southern Ports.

“I’ve wanted to become a marine pilot for as long as I can remember, and Southern Ports operate very professional ports, with really good training programs, so I knew this was where I wanted to be,” Mr Even said.

“As a trainee marine pilot, I get the opportunity to learn from the senior pilots and Harbour Master, to become an expert in local knowledge and Esperance Port ship handling.”

Marine pilots are responsible for delivering piloting and berthing services to ensure the safe and expedient movement of vessels through the Port.
